Position size calculator

Calculate whole-share position size from available capital, planned risk, entry price and an assumed stop price. For unleveraged long stock positions.

Your assumptions

Example inputs are prefilled. Replace them with your figures.

Use one currency throughout. Changing this label does not convert your values.

YOUR SCENARIO

Planned loss budget—
Whole shares—
Capital used—
Loss at assumed stop—

Unleveraged long positions and whole shares only. Fees and slippage are excluded. A stop price does not guarantee an exit price or cap actual losses.

How it works

Loss budget = capital × risk %. Shares = floor(min(loss budget ÷ (entry − stop), capital ÷ entry)).

Worked example

With capital of 10,000 and planned risk of 1%, the loss budget is 100. An entry price of 50 and assumed stop of 45 give a risk of 5 per share. The calculated position is 20 whole shares, using 1,000 of capital.

Common questions

How is position size calculated from risk?

Divide the planned cash loss by the difference between entry and assumed stop prices. The calculator rounds down to whole shares and also limits the position to your available capital.

Is this a forex lot size calculator?

No. It handles unleveraged long positions in whole shares. It does not model forex lots, pip values, leverage, short positions or contract multipliers.

Does a stop guarantee my maximum loss?

No. Gaps, slippage and fees can make actual losses larger. The stop is an assumption for planning, not a guaranteed execution price.
